Brief Musings On HNW

Harsh Noise Wall is what I imagined Noise Music was like back when I first read about it in nineties on Joe Roemer's "The Current State of American Noise" article on Resound Magazine. It was the first time I heard about something called Noise and Roemer's descriptions were the seed to my current noise obsession. It was also the first time I read about names like The Haters, The Rita, Woe Is Me, etc... and just tried to imagine what that sounded like in those pre-internet days (at least for me).

The current backlash into Harshness in sound I believe is a direct response to more "popular" noise. Not necessarily in a confrontational sense, but just getting back to the roots (so to speak) of noise. The monolithic, destructive, offensive, enormous wall of sound that can be best experienced live. In person. Back in 2007 I played a show in Los Angeles and Rale & Monsturo played a collaborative set which was one of the best listening experiences I've had. Total control of a dense wall of noise. A physical entity which you could actually feel all over. It was amazing.

Anyway, about Woe Is Me... I need to go and dig up that "Underground USA" tape. It's in here somewhere...
